Electromagnetic wave shielding material for EMC measures that provides moderate shielding against high frequency electromagnetic waves

 made in Japan 

"MGnet" for EMC countermeasures is a special material made by weaving silver fiber (nylon coated with 99.9% pure silver), which is also used in various electromagnetic wave protective clothing, into a honeycomb (hexagonal) mesh (mesh size approximately 1 mm) and then applying a special coating (conductive rust prevention processing).

It is highly durable and its shielding performance does not deteriorate even after repeated folding or washing.When ordinary shielding mesh or sheet materials are folded, the metal parts peel off or break, causing the performance to deteriorate. In addition, silver fibers that are not treated with conductive rust prevention will deteriorate in performance within about a year due to sulfurization and chlorination.

MGnet has an electromagnetic wave blocking performance of approximately 20dB or more with a single layer, 35dB or more with a double layer, 40dB or more with a triple layer, and 50dB or more with a quadruple layer, and the shielding performance can be adjusted according to the application.
Materials with too high a shielding performance (80 dB or more) can cause large reflections and have unexpected effects on equipment.※

  • ・Diffusion of reflected electromagnetic waves:Materials with high reflectivity scatter electromagnetic waves over a wide area, and surrounding equipment may be affected by the reflected electromagnetic waves.
  • ・Electromagnetic Interference (EMI):Reflected electromagnetic waves can enter other electronic devices or systems, causing electromagnetic interference and disrupting the normal operation of those devices.
  • ・Increasing complexity of the electromagnetic environment:Reflected electromagnetic waves are scattered in multiple directions, complicating the electromagnetic environment and increasing the risk of electromagnetic interference occurring in unexpected places, making it difficult to predict the effects on specific equipment or systems.
  • ・Reduced shielding effectiveness:When a material with high reflectivity is used, re-radiation or resonance of electromagnetic waves occurs, the expected shielding effect cannot be obtained, and control of electromagnetic waves becomes difficult.

Example: Malfunction verification test of electromagnetic wave protective clothing (CES protector) for capsule endoscopes

  • In developing electromagnetic wave protective clothing for capsule endoscopes, protective clothing was created using MGnet 2-layer (approximately 40 dB) and MGnet 4-layer (approximately 60 dB) materials, and the capsule endoscope antenna was installed in seven locations on various parts of a human dummy. The capsule endoscope was embedded in the abdomen, and the person wearing each protective clothing was irradiated with electromagnetic waves in the frequency band of the telemeter. The distance at which an error occurred was measured by bringing the antenna closer.
  • ・MGnet 2-layer (approx. 40 dB):There was no variation in the distance at which errors occurred depending on the position of the seven antennas. The distance at which errors occurred was reduced almost uniformly.
  • ・MGnet 4-layer (approx. 60 dB):The distance at which errors occurred varied depending on the positions of the seven antennas, and errors occurred even from far away depending on the antenna position.

Electromagnetic wave countermeasures (EMI countermeasures)

MGnet is a fabric with a soft texture, yet at 10 to 2500MHz, it provides shielding performance of more than 20dB (attenuation rate of 90%) with a single sheet, and more than 50dB (attenuation rate of 99.9%) with four sheets stacked.※If the shielding performance is too high, the effects of reflection and resonance may become greater, which may increase electromagnetic interference with the DUT or other equipment.※MGnet can adjust the shielding performance according to the situation.

Anti-static (static)

It has low electrical resistance and is effective in preventing static electricity (electrostatic buildup). This prevents the adhesion of dust and cigarette smoke, and reduces the deterioration of equipment performance. It also makes regular cleaning easier.

MGnet's honeycomb mesh has a structure of interlocking loops, so the silver on the surface will not peel off even if it is bent or twisted. In addition, it has a special conductive anti-rust treatment, so it is resistant to rust, discoloration, and deterioration, so it can maintain its performance for more than two years. Environmental Considerations

MGnet is extremely light. Metal plates used as shielding materials require a lot of heat energy during manufacturing and recycling, and because they are heavy, they consume a lot of energy during transportation, which leads to increased CO2 emissions. On the other hand, we collect used MGnet products and have a processor recycle the silver.

How to use

Make sure the area is well ventilated, check the direction of the nozzle, hold the can 20-30cm away, shake the can vigorously about 10 times, and spray thinly and evenly over the entire surface. You can use the same method for up to 4 layers, but it is more efficient to spray in layers. After spraying, leave the can to dry indoors for about 1-2 hours.

Frequency of use

For shielding bags and sheets that are touched daily, spray once every three months. For tents and shielding boxes that are not touched, spray after the first year and then use once within the next two years; the product's performance will hardly deteriorate even after five years or more.
